What Layered loved in 2017

Brilliant products for our hair were in abundance last year, from micellar shampoos and scalp scrubs to texturisers and masks. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which are worth shelling out for. We’ve trawled through our haul from 2017 and whittled them down to just 12 hair heroes. You’re quite welcome…

R+Co Crown Scalp Scrub and Aveda pramāsana

Scalp care was big last year and for good reason – a clean, healthy scalp is the first step to great hair. Our pick of the best scalp products are Crown from R+Co and Aveda’s pramāsana range. The Crown scalp scrub will detox, cleanse and rebalance your scalp, and is particularly good for sensitive or oily scalps (and there's no need to worry about those pesky particles as they dissolve as you massage the scrub into your scalp), while the pramāsana range includes an exfoliating scalp brush to help tackle build-up and impurities.

Redken’s Clean Maniac and Kérastase's Aura Botanica

We don't think we're being too dramatic when we say micellar water has saved our lives (well our skin at least) and last year these oil molecules entered the hair market. We particularly loved Redken’s Clean Maniac and Aura Botanica Bain Micellaire by Kerastase. Both clean the hair without sulphates or silicones, but Clean Maniac features NEOFRESH technology that protects the hair from picking up scents, gently washing away pollutants, while Aura Botanica Bain Micellaire 'magnetically' cleanses for ‘squeaky clean’ hair.

Davines The Circle Chronicles

We love the no-commitment feel of these masks. Based on the idea that your skin doesn't always need the same old moisturiser and your hair is no different, The Circle Chronicles by Davines is a range of five masks. Each is designed to be used once only to meet the needs of your hair and scalp in that moment. Whether it’s a mundane Monday or work drinks on a Friday, there’s a mask for every mood! They’re also slim and can fit in any cabin luggage easily, making them perfect for weekend breaks or the gym.

Bumble and bumble Save the day and While you sleep

You can now care for your hair round the clock (we know you've always wanted to) with Bumble and bumble's Save the Day and While You Sleep. Both revitalise and repair at-risk strands – and are perfect for those with coloured hair, frequent stylers and people who are in the sun or in polluted urban areas (so everyone then).

ghd contour and Hot Tools

It was a big year for hair tools with ghd proving it's always ahead of the trends with the contour and Hot Tools launching a CurlBar that looked unlike any other curling tool we'd seen before. The contour hair crimper has helped us add volume and texture to our hairstyles – two styles that are going to be big this year as hair is set to get, well, bigger, while the 24ct gold CurlBar has already changed how we wave our hair  – not least for the lack of arm ache after using it. A thank you card is in the post...

Kerasilk Style by Goldwell

Fighting frizz is a never-ending battle between us and our hair (the struggle is real), and while Goldwell’s Kerasilk services answered our need for smooth, soft strands in the salon, the launch of Kerasilk Style last year meant we could now achieve super-smoothness at home. All seven products contain the brand's high-performing Keratransform technology, which makes results truly last, while the precious silk protein leaves hair exceptionally soft to touch.

Hair by Sam McKnight was one of the biggest and most exciting product launches of last year (when legendary fashion week hairstylist, Sam McKnight launches a hair range, people stand up and take notice) and our favourite of the four-strong range is Cool Girl. It's fab at creating dishevelled, devil-may-care hair (a la Kate Moss) as it is a barely there texturiser that gives perfect mussed-up texture. Oh and it smells delish, with aromas based on Sam's garden (see @SamMcKnight1). One spray and we can say we've been styled by Sam!

Neon by Paul Mitchell

We went crazy last year for this natural sugar-infused range that makes styling fun AND gives us a dose of the feel-good factor. Paul Mitchell Neon has teamed up with The Diana Award’s charity, Stand Up To Bullying, so every time you buy a Neon product, you’re supporting young people who have done exceptional anti-bullying work. We also love the '80s-style funky packaging and, while it’s primarily aimed at Generation Z, we think there’s something for all ages. Notable standouts are the Sugar Spray for its no crunch feel, and smoothing Sugar Cream for keeping flyaways at bay when we’re having a braid day.

L'Oréal Professional Inforcer

Not to be overly dramatic but our hair is constantly under attack, be it from daily blow-drying, styling or air pollution, it all contributes to hair damage. So it’s no wonder more of us are looking at ways to strengthen our hair. Inforcer by L'Oréal Professional Serie Expert is one of the best we've found at bringing our hair back to life and giving it an extra layer of defence. It’s anti-breakage (bye, bye split ends) and strengthens the hair thanks to added Biotin and B6 – vitamins known for their strengthening properties.

Bed Head by TIGI

Curly hair is going to be big this year (and we mean BIG) and Bed Head by TIGI has just the thing to bring those curls to life. We love the brilliantly named Calma Sutra Cleansing Conditioner, as well as Screw It Curl Hydrating Jelly Oil, which delivers a delicious dose of intense moisture and shine. Need to help fighting frizz? Get Twisted Anti-Frizz Finishing Spray is your go to, locking in waves and curls. Surfboards, Sex Wax and hanging 10 optional.

Revlon Professional UniqONE dry shampoo and Nioxin Instant Fullness Dry Boosting Cleanser

We know what you're thinking... more dry shampoos? Seriously? But, seriously, these need to be your new go-to's. We're sure your current dry shampoo is great, but does it smell great? Both of these refresh locks and provide volume, but also smell lovely, with Nioxin's Instant Fullness Dry Boosting Cleanser leaving behind a zingy minty scent to our tousled locks.

L’Oréal Professionnel #COLORFULHAIR and Joico Instatints

Unless you’ve been living under a Wi-Fi-free rock, you’ll know rainbow hair stole the Insta-show last year. For many, it’s been a bit of a DIY experimentation, but that’s where #Colorfulhair from L'Oréal Professional comes in. This salon-only line features a palette of eight intermixable direct dye shades to give you THOUSANDS of colour possibilities. For something a little more temporary, we love Joico Instatints. With 13 shades to choose, you can have fun without the commitment (and even dark-haired girls can enjoy these as these shades show up on darker hair, too).
