After much anticipation, the Pantone Color of the Year 2023 has been revealed. Drumroll please… it’s Viva Magenta! We asked the experts how this vibrant pink hue will shape hair trends in the coming year
Every year the colour experts at Pantone announce what the key colour for the coming year will be. This shade will often work its way into multiple lifestyle elements, appearing everywhere you look – through fashion, interiors and, of course, beauty.
2022’s Very Peri shade has been followed by the announcement of Viva Magenta for 2023, described as ‘an unconventional shade for an unconventional time’ by the colour institution.
‘Pantone’s Color of The Year, Viva Magenta 18-750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative’ – Pantone
We can absolutely see this shade translating into hair trends for the coming year! As ‘a nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool,’ it should also be super flattering for a wide range of different skin tones.
We asked some of the top colour artists about how they see Viva Magenta playing out in hair colour trends for next year…
Sarah Mason, owner of Sarah Mason Professional in Galway, Ireland
“I am absolutely obsessed with Pantone’s Viva Magenta shade. It’s such an incredible colour to wear this season; it’s expensive, vibrant and uplifting, while showing strength and empowerment. I have been making shades on this spectrum since September.
“Viva Magenta is an exuberant colour that is simple to replicate for the hairdresser using the Wella Professionals portfolio. There are so many colour choices with the key characteristics of blue and violet to create a variety of shades surrounding the trend. What’s also important is that shades like these carry a vibrancy, luminosity and vinyl shine, which help the colours to look both expensive and on-trend.”
Dan Spiller, JOICO Color ambassador for the UK, Europe and Ireland
“A descendant from the ‘red’ family, Viva Magenta is a colour which displays strength, brightness and a sense of warmth and inclusion. With reds set to be a big trend for 2023, this gorgeous new vibrant colour will take centre stage. It is very unique in its own way and something we expect clients to love just as much as us. We can use the colour as flashes throughout the hair, all-over as a global application or as a gorgeous balayage technique – the opportunities are endless. 2023 is about being creative and excited about colour, and Viva Magenta is the perfect way to begin this new colour journey.”
Brian Leo McCallum, owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty
What a gorgeous shade to see as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2023. While vibrant and bright, this shade is actually very versatile and can be incorporated into many different hair colours and styles. Whether it is subtle hints of pink through a deep brunette, or pastel hues on blondes looking to play with the magenta shade, or a guest fully embracing the Viva Magenta metaverse – the choices are endless! ROAR can customise any colour mixture to include this new exciting trend.
Seung Ki Baek, RUSH Salons Artistic Team member
“Pinks were so on trend throughout 2022, with hot pinks in particular being prominent on the catwalks, so it’s no surprise that a pink tone would be the colour of the year for 2023. With Viva Magenta being a richer, more berry-like hue, this is the perfect shade for the winter period.
“This shade can be worn on both darker hair shades and lighter hair tones, and will of course be more vibrant on those who already have their hair lightened. I think this shade would look particularly great on those with shorter hair, being panelled through the hair to give a funky, high fashion finish. However, no matter how this colour is worn in the hair, clients should ensure they use colour saving shampoos and conditioners, as well as treatments, to keep the colour looking vivid and to avoid it from fading and looking dull.”
Suzie McGill, artistic director at Rainbow Room International
“Viva Magenta is such a beautiful, strong and energetic shade in comparison to last year’s Veri Peri hue. The beauty of this shade is that it will add warmth and a gorgeous glow to all complexions. However, it will look particularly flattering on those with medium-darker skin tones.
“On hair this colour can be so much fun. It can be worn all over, for clients who want something bold and vibrant, or it can be paired with a root stretch for something a little more low-maintenance yet still quirky and exciting. Being a darker pink/red hue, this will also give the hair a beautiful sheen, particularly on brunettes. This would also look amazing on those with textured, curly hair, adding beautiful ribbons of warmth and shimmer throughout.”
