The Salon Solved It… Heatwave Haircut

Layered Online reader Sarah dreads summer rolling around. With such thick hair, this week’s heatwave got too much – could Westrow in Yorkshire give her a breath of fresh (h)air?

Every summer I find myself sweltering under my thick hair – and with this week’s heatwave on the horizon, I couldn’t bear it any longer. I was in dire need of a serious chop. The Layered Online team introduced me to the latest addition to the 10-strong Westrow group. When I heard it was at the award-winning Rudding Park spa in Harrogate I was sold!

At my appointment I was greeted warmly by Millie Rayner, the stylist, who sat me down and asked what kind of cut I was looking for. I explained how thick and heavy my hair is, especially since I hadn’t had a hair cut in a (long) while, and that I really needed it thinning down for the summer heat. I also mentioned that I wanted to jazz up my hair a bit for the festival season with some colour, and we settled on a vivid lilac from the new Revlon Professional Color Excel range.

Could Millie give me a weight-lifting cut that would save me from melting?

With a refreshing glass of water flavoured with cucumber in hand and the massage chair engaged, I was feeling thoroughly pampered as we made a start. Millie began by lifting my hair enough to take the colour with some freehand balayage, before a rinse out with Revlon Professional EKSperience products, which I was amazed to learn used algae as an ingredient for super hydration, and a head massage.

Millie towel-dried off the worst (a challenge with my thick hair, water stays in it for ages) and sat me back down to start my cut. She gave my hair a good combing with a Tangle Teezer to remove any knots and started cutting. Once I was happy with the length – off the neck but below the chin – she started to thin it out. Millie explained that she was working in diagonal sections to create the bob, chipping into the ends because I’d told her I really don’t like a blunt finish. She also did a bit of an undercut to help remove some of the weight which makes everything so hot, thinning it out on both sides.

She continued shortening it and thinning it out on each layer. She stopped every so often to check in with me, whether I felt it was thin enough or if would like more taken off. Once the back was finished she moved on to my sides and then my front, where I requested some shorter, sweeping sections to frame my face. My hair felt so much lighter, it was unbelievable.

Once I was happy with the style she used a general conditioning spray, UniqOne from Revlon Professional, which left my hair smelling wonderfully of coconuts. With my hair protected she blow-dried it and asked if I would like some easy beach style curls – always a yes! Finally she finished with Revlon Professional’s Hydro Nutritive serum, also part of the EKSperience range.

I left the salon with a cool head of hair (ba-dum, tshh!) and the cut and colour of my dreams. What a lovely experience in this hidden gem of a salon!
