After a year-long hiatus (thanks global pandemic!) many of us have never been happier to see the return of Love Island. We’ve got the merchandise, followed this season’s stars on Instagram and have pencilled out 9PM in our diaries for the next couple of months as Love Island series seven gets underway. But as well as giving us a chance to embrace a new set of catchphrases, the cast also serve up plenty of hair inspo for the summer ahead.
Just a matter of days into the new series and we’ve already seen voluminous blowdries, relaxed waves and super cool half up-dos which are perfect for nights out with the girls. So, what’s the secret to creating these show-stopping looks? Layered Online caught up with one of the villa’s hairstylists for this season to find out the top styling tips, tricks and products.
Along with three other hair pros, Natalie from Perez Hair has been on set in Majorca prepping the strands of the 2021 cast ahead of their villa arrival. While Liam Campbell and Tariq Howes have been taking care of the boys’ fresh cuts, Natalie has been working closely with wig specialists, FreeBorn Noble, to get the girls’ strands in top condition.
With endless experience gorgeous waves and long locks as an extensions specialist, Natalie is the queen of creating effortlessly cool styles with a touch of glamour. In particular, Liberty’s beautiful blonde strands wowed fans during the launch, and we can totally see why.
The ultimate big and bouncy curls
“To reflect Liberty’s bubbly personality, I wanted to create something sexy, big and bouncy which was Love Island ready,” says Natalie. Once her hair was freshly washed, Natalie used Redken’s Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to begin building the volume, before using a heat protection styling spray and combing the product through. Taking large sections of hair, she used a large barrelled curling tong to wrap hair around the barrel and curl away from the face. Once finished curling the loose waves, Natalie used Redken’s Control Addict 28 Extra Strong Hold Anti-Humidity Hairspray, which is great for allowing any further brushing while protecting against the heat. To help tame anyway flyaways, she also added a strong-hold polish to de-frizz and smooth.
To create the beach wave style so many of us love, Natalie’s top tip is to start from the nape of the neck when curling, and always take horizontal sections. Parting the hair in small sections is also key in order to have greater control of curl size as you work your way to the top.
Tousled, textured waves
“Sharon’s textured, tousled hair style is suitable for both day and night, and any hair length,” explains Natalie. “This relaxed undone style is easy to master, and right on trend for this summer.” Surprisingly, just four steps were needed to create Sharon’s debut style. Natalie began by spraying wet hair with a texturising mist to add grip. For thin hair, she recommends also using a root lifting product on wet hair, such as Redken’s Volume Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray, as this will add volume and hold the style for longer.
After using heat protection spray and blowdrying the hair, Sharon starting curling the hair approximately three inches from the root. Using a smaller barrel, she loosely wrapped sections of different sizes around the barrel, while ensuring the ends of the hair were left free. Natalie finished the look by adding a small amount of the Fudge Professional Aqua Shine Serum through the hair for extra humidity resistance and humidity control.
