The hair masks to get you through lockdown

The search is on (according to Google’s top search results) for hair masks in lockdown. So here you go – slather on and continue the countdown to salons reopening…

We love a hair mask here at Layered Online, and it seems finally the rest of the world is catching on in lockdown. It was the third highest Google beauty search over March and April, up 333% as people around the world panicked about maintaining their hair without the help of their trusty stylist. So, we thought we’d share a few marvellous masks to keep you going…

The Colour Ones

Very few (bottle) blondes want that warm, brassy tone that creeps in over time, and a great purple-hued mask will work wonders in cooling down that yellow to something more pearly. One of the purpliest (that’s a word, right?) is the brilliant Kérastase Blond Absolut Masque Ultra Violet Treatment. If Prince had decided to go into the butter business, it would have looked like this – thick, violet, packing a punch. Be warned that it will look like you’ve murdered a small purple-blooded alien in your shower, and you’ll need to rinse off your tiles and give your nails a good scrub unless you take the PPE into the shower with you.

Want to have a play with a pastel, or see red for a bit but without any real commitment? Then welcome the Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask. It’s super quick and also conditions your hair with its 50/50 colour/care formula. Simply wash in, wait five to seven minutes, and wash out. Done! Rose gold? Hibiscus? Aquamarine? You’ve got seven tones to choose from. Check out Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and her “quarantint” – she had a play with Bordeaux.

You’ll know what a hair-saver bonding additives have been since Olaplex first launched, and the latest innovation to impress is this Color Motion Structure Mask with WellaPlex. It offers up to eight weeks of extended colour protection, helping to prevent fading and oxidisation. It’s also gorgeously thick, and delivers super shine, perfect polish while promising reinforced strength. Engineered with the WellaPlex bonding agent, the mask helps to restore the hair by reconstructing broken bonds within the hair structure that have been through chemical treatments like colouring. Bit clever, that.

The Nourishing Ones

If your hair’s really been suffering in the time away from the salon (shout out to all the bottle blondes, heat styling addicts and those cultivating Grande-esque lengths), you’re going to need something stronger than a hydration hit. Step up Marula Oil Intensive Hair Masque, which is infused with a cold-pressed, antioxidant-rich oil to help heal distressed and damaged hair.

Extracted from the seeds of an African tree fruit, marula oil is supremely hydrating and cuticle smoothing. Full of vitamins (great for hair and scalp health), fatty acids (hello shine!) and uniquely rich in hair-rebuilding protein, it is easily absorbed, making it a highly effective treatment for the thirstiest of strands. It also provides UV protection to prevent further environmental damage. And it smells amazing, which doesn’t hurt.

Schwarzkopf Professional BC Peptide Repair Rescue Treatment
Marula Oil Intensive Hair Masque

Ready for some big claims? Schwarzkopf Professional’s BC Peptide Repair Rescue Treatment has been designed to reverse three years of damage in just one use. Inspired by skincare ingredients and anti-ageing technology (that’s why the word peptide seems familiar), the potent formula works to restructure the hair from the inside out – replenishing the inside of each strand for fullness and renewed elasticity, and resurfacing the outer cuticle to restore softness and turn up the shine.

Once it’s done its repair work and balanced the moisture content of your hair, this mask also leaves lengths protected from static and frizz with a weightless anti-friction shield. Just pop a cape on it and give it its own superhero movie already!

It may be vegan and cruelty free, but you know a mask means business when it has a name like Aveda’s Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment. Proving that naturally derived ingredients can still pack a hefty replenishing punch, this quinoa protein-based formula is boosted with pure plant oils, and as a result, improves hair strength as well as silkiness.

Designed to pose a triple threat, it laughs in the face of bleach damage, isn’t phased by weakness caused by straightener or tong use, and relishes repairing the look of sun or environmentally stressed lengths. Use it weekly for deep repair and a clear conscience.

The Selfie Ones

As well as reviving tired tresses, hair masks can also deliver the perfect photo opportunity for Insta… did someone say lockdown pamper night for one? Inspired by facial sheet masks, the Redken All Soft Mega Sheet Mask is a tissue mask cap which restores softness and manageability. Created as a weekly, one-time use treatment, the at-home mask blends Cactus Extract, Aloe Vera and Sacha Inchi Oil to nourish and strengthen brittle strands from root to tip. If your hair has been feeling seriously out of sorts while staying at home, this is the perfect option to give your strands a tall glass of water AND reel in those double taps while you do it.
