And the Oscar goes to…. these hair looks!

While the 2022 Academy Awards were certainly full of drama, it was the variety of hair looks which had the Layered Online team talking. We asked experts how to recreate some of these Oscars hair looks to try yourself…

Jennifer Garner – Classic Glam Waves

The Oscars this year brought us plenty of old school Hollywood glam, which we’re always here for. Jenny Cho was the magic hands behind the look, using Virtue’s Healing Oil for incredible shine and a relaxed finish. Inanch Emir, renowned extensionist and creative director of Inanch, London, shares how to get Jennifer Garner’s effortless look.

“I loved Jennifer’s simple and elegant Pretty Woman look she went for this year. This look is suitable for so many occasions.” Sharing how to get the look, Inanch says: “First use a volumising spray at the roots of your hair, then depending on your hair type either blow (if you have curly hair) or rough dry (if you have straight hair) and then with a large barrel, curl twist and wrap the hair around the barrel. Allow the hair to cool down before brushing out. Then use a small amount of styling gel to keep one side flat and behind the hair. Finish with a flexible hairspray to hold everything else in place.”

Vanessa Hudgens – Sleek Top Knot

Vanessa Hudgens, who co-hosted, wowed us with her slicked-back, sharp top knot. Created by Danielle Priano, it paired perfectly with her slinky sequinned black cut-out dress.

Sharing the steps to get her super chic twisted bun, Barry Maddocks, creative director of Haringtons says, “Vanessa’s sleek twisted bun is stunning, and super easy to achieve. First prep the hair with Tecni.ART Rebel Push Up from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris to give the hair extra grip. Once dried in, put hair up in a simple high ponytail and spray with hairspray to keep extra sleek. Split the ponytail into two and twist each length until they fold back on themselves. Pin in place until you’ve got the desired shape. Finish with Tecni.ART Ring Light Shine Spay for that high shine gloss.”

Lupita Nyong’o – Braided Up-Do

Lupita never disappoints on the red carpet, and her striking up-do was no different. Created by the inimitable Vernon Francois using Matrix, he “used a blend of basket weaving, wefting and loc extension techniques to create an asymmetric playful structure that echoes the floral design of Lupita’s dress”.

Anne Veck, founder of Anne Veck in Oxford, was also a huge fan. “Lupita’s hair takes braids to a whole new level… quite literally. I love this look because it’s the perfect example of how much fun you can have with Afro hair. It defies gravity, and I love the intricate details of the braid intertwined within the hair style.”

If you’re looking to make a statement like this, then the secret to nailing this style is a strong foundation. “Secure a ponytail on the crown of the head, make sure it’s in a diagonal line with the nose, this is always more pleasing to the eye. Then use a doughnut or two to add height and build the hairstyle from there, finishing with a flexible hairspray for extra matte and hold.”

Kristen Stewart – Surfer-Chic Waves

‘Breaking’ all the red-carpet rules, Kristen Stewart eschewed the traditional trappings of Hollywood glam with a daring shorts ensemble and hair that reflected that devil-may-care attitude she’s known for. She teamed up with her regular hair hero, Adir Abergel, to create the flipped-over waves look. Jemma Mewies, salon co-owner of Mewies & Co says: “The wet look is so in right now and Kristen Stewart’s Oscars look is the perfect example of this trend.”

Adding her top tips for recreating the look, she says: “To recreate these chic wet waves start with damp hair, either towel dried or partially blow dried. Gently comb through to detangle then add your favourite texturising spray and mousse; I love the Authentic Beauty Concept Nymph Salt Spray and Amplify Mousse. They’re vegan, cruelty-free, lightweight and second to none on professional performance! Once you have applied a generous amount of product, create the desired shape, whether it be a deep parting, slicked back or central parting.

“Next, dry the product in slightly before shaping the hair for the desired final look, then, using a low and cool setting on your dryer, finish drying the hair – the low, cool setting helps to reduce frizz and is kinder to the hair. Once dry, set with use your favourite hairspray. I always reach for the Authentic Beauty Concept Working Hairspray and then finish with a shine spray like OSiS+ Sparkler by Schwarzkopf Professional.”
