Samantha Hillerby has styled stars such as Kate Moss, Kendall Jenner and Kiera Knightly – now she’s styling YOU with these DIY friendly cool looks
Please meet Samantha Hillerby – a busy session hair stylist who’s often behind the scenes on magazine shoots dressing the tresses of celebrities and models including Kendall Jenner, Keira Knightley and Kylie Minogue. She recently hit the stage for The Coterie: In Session event with our sister site, Creative HEAD, showing a little of the magic that gets her booked on the regular. Here are two looks we straight up LOVED – and we think you will too!
Drawing inspiration from the hair icons of the ‘70s, Samantha recreated a free-spirited fashion look that she first styled on the one and only Kate Moss during a shoot for Italian Vogue. “I always reference icons,” Samantha explained, “I often end up showing clients how their chosen looks have been heavily inspired by the likes of Bardot, Farrah Fawcett and other timeless styles… Even my recent shoot with Kendall (Jenner), which went crazy and blew up beyond belief on social media, drew on her being a brunette Marilyn Monroe character.” here’s how to recreate it:
Prep hair by layering in mousse and rough dry in. Pop in some tape extensions to pump up the volume and length if you fancy.
Segment hair into half-inch sections. Use a fine hairspray (Samantha loves Oribe’s Superfine Hairspray) to make each section wet before using the BaByliss PRO Deep Waver to slowly wave the hair from root to end, until the hairspray is dry and stiff. Leave to cool.
Take a gentle brush and brush out all the hairspray until hair is soft and fluffy.
Use a dry texture spray to create a soft halo/fluffy, modern and undone finish. Hello Little Mermaid!
‘90s Raver knots
Think The Prodigy and the ‘90s dance scene for this one! Samantha twisted each section to form a bun, used elastic to tie them in place and then pinned them to the scalp, keeping the ends free so they splayed out and resembled a spiky, textured mohawk. “Contrived, perfectly tweaked updos – especially when it comes to occasion hair or bridal – can be so ageing,” she explained. “Again, this style nods to a landmark style from a certain era, but the right balance of polished salon and edgier session techniques make it modern.”
Layer the hair with mousse and rough dry to create guts and grit – essential for keeping hair up! Section the hair where you want the knots and tie them into ponytails with elastic.
Knot and twist the hair, pinning in place. Leave out ends to create a punky Mohawk effect.
Finish with a beach spray for texture and use a shine spray to separate the ends. Rave on!
When Samantha isn’t travelling the world to style shoots for the fash mags, she has her own hair studio in Yorkshire – take a look at thesamhair on Instagram!
