5 ways to beat hangover hair

Overdone it at a Christmas party? Step out the next day with your head held high and your hair looking fresh with our expert tips…

Tis the season… for throwing on something sparkly and popping open a bottle (or two) to catch up with friends and work colleagues. Which is all very well, until you wake up the next morning still in a glittery top, and realise you were meant to meet your sister for brunch an hour ago. If you’ve overindulged a little, fear not – you make the coffee, and we’ll sort your strands with some easy hairstyles!

1. Get slick
Your strands are probably feeling a little greasy, but you can use this to create polished yet easy hairstyles. Robert Eaton, creative director at Russell Eaton salons and Wella Professionals UK & Ireland creative technical director, says: “Why not embrace a wet look or a gelled style – this is super modern and stylish, whether worn down or pulled into a sleek pony”. It’s the perfect opportunity to try that slicked down low bun you’ve always wanted to wear.

2. Build some texture
Using the texture from your slept-in bed hair to your advantage and create a ponytail with movement. “Sweep your hair back in to a low pony at the nape of the neck,” says Jonathan Turner of Hooker & Young salon group. “Tease the roots out slightly with your fingers to give a ‘lived in’ texture. Secure it with a band and then take a small section of the pony tail and wrap it around the base and secure with a kirby grip. Tease the lengths of the ponytail out to release the natural texture of the hair.”

3. Distract, distract, distract!
There’s nothing wrong with diverting the eyes from your unwashed hair with a little sparkle, says Kelly May, artistic director at Amazon Salon. “Get your L’Oréal Professionnel Paris TECNI.ART Super Dust, and apply it well into your hair to give a boost. Plait your hair into two braids and then pin them up into a headband. Add some hair accessories and to finish, spray some hair perfume hair to add a fresh fragrance.”

4. Embrace dry shampoo
“Dry shampoo is your friend!” says Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional brand ambassador. “Always make sure to have some to hand for days when you don’t have time to wash your hair. It works great at soaking up any unwanted moisture just make sure you give your hair a little shake to avoid any white build-up.”

5. Use your toothbrush!
“This can be used for your hair when in a hurry to create a sleek finish in a minute,” says Simon Hill, owner of SESH Hairdressing in Edinburgh. “If you have fly away hairs, lightly spray your toothbrush with a strong hold hairspray and gently brush through to flatten and secure the hair. This will keep your style looking sleek and sophisticated.” Just make sure you replace your toothbrush afterwards!
