Here at Layered Online, we like to be one step ahead of the crowd as we search out the best new names and award-winning hair heroes across the industry to inspire your future visits to the salon. So, we’ve teamed up with our sister title Creative HEAD Magazine to share with you some of the 2020 winners for its Most Wanted and The It List Awards.
The It List is dedicated to the hair talents of tomorrow, all aged 30 and under, while Most Wanted dives into hair heroes across the UK, featuring stylists and salons of all shapes and sizes. These award winners are all true game-changers; don’t forget to book in quick before they reach waiting list levels!
The It List Rising Star
Annabel Payne (@annabel_payne00)
The special thing about this It List category is that its winner is put forward by their boss, as someone truly special for their age and level. These are the ones to get in early with, showing talent above their years, who you can boast about as their careers flourish. Annabel blew the judges away with her skills and passion for editorial work; she’s already assisting the Toni&Guy international art directors on sets aged just 20!

The It Guy
Tom Gilling (@tomgilling)
Adam Reed London
We’ve already touched on why Adam Reed London is one of the hottest salons in the UK, and talents like Tom are exactly why. In 2019 he won The Fashionista award, and he went one better this year to win the coveted It Guy title. Tom works across huge fashion shows and shoots, TV and music sets, but equally loves whipping up bespoke creations in the salon along with his skilled colleagues in the salon.

The It Girl
Leah Hayden Cassidy (@hayden_cassidy)
Unit8 by HAYDEN, London
Leah Hayden came to the hair industry late after being forced to give up a promising football career through injury, but BOY has she made an impression! She’s become a huge name in the barbering industry within a handful of years, travelling the world as an educator for tools brand Andis and launching her own education business. Hayden is the first barber winner of The It Girl, and we can’t wait to see what heights she reaches next.

Most Wanted Colour Expert
Paddy McDougall (@paddymcdougall)
Rainbow Room International, Glasgow
One of THE most hotly contested categories in Most Wanted, Colour Expert is awarded to a colourist whose skills stand head and shoulders above the rest. We’ve seen Paddy’s talents in his work creating ’90s-inspired colour trends for Indola, and he’s also a frequent flier on shoots and fashion weeks across the world. His technical knowledge of colour is unmatched and he loves to create stunning, personalised shades for his clients in the salon.

Most Wanted Best New Salon
Mesart, Glasgow (@mesarthair)
This is a huge achievement to win, naming the best new salon opening of the past 12 months. Mesart took the crown amid fierce competition, and we weren’t surprised to see it – we’ve previously covered what makes this new super-salon special. A fluid, creative space with a focus on creating the ultimate wind-down experience for clients, it’s certainly no surprise to see how enamoured the judges were.

Best New Boutique Salon
Paint+Powder, Stafford (@paintandpowderhair)
Small but perfectly formed, Paint + Powder has been a labour of love for owner Katie Mulcahy, who embarked on a major renovation of a 16th century building with a five week old baby. But the hard work was well worth it; this petite salon has an innate sense of comfort, cocooning you from the outside world where you can be the focus of attention for as long as you choose to stay. Warm wooden furniture, pastel floral touches and squishy velvet sofas… all of the textural choices scream relaxation, and the service is top-notch to boot.
